Our Mission and Purpose

Mission:

Our mission is to provide a variety of classrooms and teachers to help students understand and apply the teachings of forgiveness and true healing as presented in A Course in Miracles.

Purpose:

The Course says that purpose is everything. It determines the meaning of our lives. If we want to find inner peace we need to change our purpose for the world from the ego’s selfish point of view to the forgiveness of the Holy Spirit. Teachers and students alike are in the same classroom.

Curriculum:

The Course provides a lifetime of study, practice and learning that brings inner peace that cannot be shaken by the external circumstances of our lives. The metaphysics of the Course are simple. However, because they are simple doesn’t mean they are easy to understand. In fact, they are so counter to anything we have ever known, applying them in our day to day living can be very difficult. We begin our spiritual journey while still believing that our separate interests will get us what we want. If we get our way, we will be happy. If we don’t, we will be miserable. In our practice we learn that separate interests of the body and world are valueless and that shared interests of forgiveness in the mind will bring us everything we want. This can take time. The student and teacher come together to learn this lesson from the same Teacher. Learning to trust this Inner Teacher, called the Holy Spirit in the Course, determines the student’s progress in the curriculum.

Rocky Mountain Miracle Center History

Did you know we’re one of the first Miracle study groups in the country to have our own building? Curious how it came to be? It all started back in 1945 when the building was constructed for “The Church of Practical Religion.” The first minister was Orlando Wanvig—he’s the guy mentioned on that plaque by our front door. You’ve probably wondered about that! In 1954, the congregation decided to switch things up and became “The Institute of Religious Science.” Then, in 1973, they changed paths again and called it the “Church of Christianity.” It seems they liked to reinvent themselves every decade or so, because in 1974, the building was renamed the “Divine Science Church of Truth.” Fast forward to 1988, when David Morrissey took over as minister. Membership was dwindling, so in 1991, David started teaching A Course in Miracles. It turned out to be a hit—more people were attending his classes than the Sunday services. When the congregation finally dwindled down to just six members, the Board decided it was time for another change. So in 1999, we became The Divine Science Church of Truth dba The Rocky Mountain Miracle Center. We switched our focus entirely to A Course in Miracles. Now, we’ve grown to nearly 100 members, and we’re still expanding. If you’re a member, you do own a bit of the building… sort of. If it’s ever sold, the proceeds go to charity, not to the members. But that’s okay—we’re planning on being here for a long time, doing the work of the Holy Spirit, who’s really the one in charge!
