Topic: Why did Helen say, “I know the Course is true, I just don’t believe it!”?
ACIM references:
Reference: Robert Skutch’s book: Journey Without Distance, Foreword (excerpts 1 & 2) by Willis W. Harman Ph.D, Regent, State of California, November 1983, Stanford, California:1 Helen hardly seemed to embody the inner peace that the Course puts forth as its goal. … I once asked her how it happened that this remarkable document she had been responsible for had brought wisdom and peace to so many, and yet it was seemingly ineffective for her. I will never forget her reply. “I know the Course is true, Bill, ” she said – and then after a pause, “but I don’t believe it.”
2. I had much to learn about the ambivalence with which we humans approach getting acquainted with our deeper selves. The daily exercises in affirming a new belief system, which comprise the second volume of the Course, seemed simple and mildly intriguing: I had no understanding at the time of the subterranean they were having. The Text … seemed abstruse … Six months later I was shocked to realize that in spite of opening the Text daily, I could not recall ever finishing a single page. I would get sleepy; my mind would wander; … and was most ingenious at avoiding … understanding the contents of the Text.In time, the conscious intention won out over the unconscious resistance. … One day I would realize that a situation which once aroused fear or hostility no longer did so – and yet I would have no conscious awareness of the deep-seated changes taking place. I would find that my trust in a deep intuition, an all-knowing and all-forgiving part of myself, had strengthened notably, again without my direct conscious knowledge of the change taking place in the unconscious part of my mind. Stress and pain disappeared. … an inner teacher guided action and removed obstacles, and the conscious mind … became naturally and comfortably the servant of the deeper mind.Reference: For a deeper understanding of the Course: Absence From Felicity by Ken Wapnick, Ph.D
