T. 21. IV. 1 – 3. Jesus: “The Holy Spirit will never teach you that you are sinful. Errors, He will correct, but this should make no one fearful! Yet you are indeed afraid to look within as long as ‘sin’ is what you think you will see there. And upon reflection, you would probably not be afraid to admit this. The ego deems fear quite appropriate in association with the notion of ‘sin,’ and smiles upon this approvingly! It has no fear to let you feel ashamed, the inevitable outcome of this association.
The ego doubts not your old belief and faith in sin. Its temples do not shake because of this! Your blind faith that sin is there within you but witnesses to your ego’s desire that it be really there. This merely seems to be the source of its fear, however!
Remember that the ego knows it is not alone and that its rule over you is tempered by something. An enemy beyond its limited perception, One Whom it cannot even see, is what it really fears! The ego loudly tells you not to look inward, for it says, ‘If you do, your eyes will light on sin, and God will strike you blind!’ This you believe, and so you do not look. Yet this is not the ego’s hidden fear, the one that really shakes its temples, nor yours who would still serve the ego.
Loudly indeed, the ego claims your sin is the problem; much too loudly and too often! For underneath this frantic proclamation and incessant shouts of warning not to look within, the ego is not at all certain that your ’sin’ is really so! Beneath your fear to look within because of your belief in sin, is yet another fear, and one which does make the ego tremble!
What if you looked within and saw no sin at all? This ‘fearful question’ is one the ego never asks. And you who ask it now are threatening the ego’s whole defensive system, and much too seriously for it to bother to pretend it is your friend!
Those who have joined their brothers have detached themselves from their belief that their identity lies in the separateness of the ego. A holy relationship is one in which you join in awareness with what is already part of you in truth. And so your belief in sin has been already shaken. Nor are you now entirely unwilling to look within and see that sin is just not there!”
